Paul Wafula, an Internews 2013 data journalism fellow has won the David Astor journalism award for his passion for investigative journalism.
The award, which was founded in the honor of the late David Astor, a former editor at The Observer, celebrates talented journalist who have a long-term commitment to African journalism.
Apart from the recognition and a cash award, the winning journalists also gets an opportunity to be embedded in newsrooms of prestigious print publications such as The Times and The Independent.
“I will use the time to strengthen my investigative reporting,” says Wafula, an investigative journalist with The Standard newspaper.
He was the only Kenyan journalist among the winners this year and he attributes his success to the data journalism fellowship he recently went through at Internews. “It nursed my critical thinking. Nowadays my storytelling is more focused on facts. I think that was one of the things the jury liked about my writing.”
One of the many data stories Paul Wafula produced during the fellowship is Change for Health an investigative series on health financing in the devolved system of governance.
