Determined to live a better tomorrow

The Free and Fair Media project held its first TV workshop in October 2011. It was geared towards developing confidence and interviewing skills as well as producing high quality conflict sensitive stories.

The theme of the workshop was The 2012 Gender Agenda which focused on women representation in elected positions.

As part of the field assignment, the journalists visited Naivasha’s Jikaze camp to report on the plight of women Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs).  People at the Jikaze IDP camp came together after being displaced from their homes following the disputed 2007 general elections. They formed a self help group through which they have purchased land to live and envision a better future at Maai Mahiu in Naivasha.

In 2009, thirty-five women from the camp created their own group so as to empower themselves economically. They live through sheer determination. However, despite the efforts, they face many challenges.

Jacque Ooko reports.
